Transferring Domains
Transferring a domain from one ISP to another
can be a difficult process or can be very
simple, but the complexity depends on a number
of factors. These factors include the domain
extension, the current ISP of the domain and
mail settings. |

Domain Name Ownership
Do you really own your domain? In the early days
of the internet, many ISPs, IT companies and
consultants registered domains in their own
names, on behalf of their clients.
99% of the time this was done in ignorance of
the fact that they would then become the legal
owner of that domain and only they could then
sell or dispose of that domain in the future.
Thousands of companies and individuals in the UK
and abroad are currently using their domain names
happily, but ignorant of the fact that they don't
own them. In many cases contact with the original
owner has been lost.
Most of the time this situation is no more than
an administrative issue - as long as the domain
renewal is paid, then everything carries on as
before indefinitely.
However situations do arise when companies or
assets are sold or disposed of.
Because domain names are classed as intellectual
property, transfer of ownership is not as
straightforward as it could be. The legal
profession has to be involved, in particular a
Notary Public has to sign a document that proves
the identity of the seller. This complexity of
procedure is necessary, otherwise the system
could be manipulated and domain names could be
stolen.
As a commercial ISP, Gconnect has been involved
in many of these transfers and disputes, and is
familiar with the systems and procedures.
Unfortunately, legal transfer of ownership of a
domain can be complex and time consuming,
especially if the Registrar is American - as is
the case for nearly all .com domains. Transfer
of .co.uk domains is easier, but still takes
several weeks.
If you are in this position, and need to become
the legal owner of your domain, Gconnect will
administer and co-ordinate the whole process for
you for a fixed fee.
UK based domains £190 + VAT
US based domains £275 + VAT
There will usually be a Notarisation fee payable
of around £100 (not always for UK domains) and
occasionally foreign (US) registrars may charge
an admin fee (usually well under £100).
The process can take up to 3 months for a
foreign domain, but has been done in as little as
3 weeks for a UK domain.
Please call Gconnect on 0845 006 0866, and ask for Ron Bentham -
our domains expert. |
